New Delhi, Sep 22(UNI) A Bill seeking to declare five Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) set up under the Public Private Partnership mode in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala, and Raichur as institutions of national importance, on Tuesday got the nod of Parliament with the Rajya Sabha passing it by a voice vote.
The Bill, which amends Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act, 2014 and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017, was moved for consideration of the House by Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
It has already been passed by the Lok Sabha.
Replying to a discussion on the Bill, the Minister said the Government aims to take more institutions from India to the global education scene.
He also assured the members that the government is committed to ensuring good education in the Northeast.
The Bill amends Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act, 2014 and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017.

Earlier, during the discussion on the Bill, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of BJP said that the Bill gives an impetus to education and employment in the northeast region.
Dr Sasmit Patra of BJD said that allotting degree-granting powers to the IIITs and declaring the institutions as those of nation importance is welcome. He suggested that amendments be made in the parent acts to ensure the institutions are given degree-granting powers instead of regular iterations.
V Vijaisai Reddy of the YSR Congrress party said that government should focus on the existing institutions of national importance as well.
