Total shutdown in Bengal to break pandemic chain

Kolkata, Sep 11 (UNI) West Bengal is observing complete lockdown today to stem the Covid-19 spike. The lockdown is in continuation of the earlier bi-weekly shutdown since July 23 to break the pandemic chain.

Today is the eleventh day of total lockdown in the state and second this month after July 23, 25, 29, August 05, 08, 20, 21, 27, 31 and September 07.

The State Government has also extended lockdown in containment zones up to September 30. Earlier, the containment zones lockdown was in force till August 31.

No flights are operational to and fro Kolkata.

Private offices, Banks and commercial establishments remained shut during the statewide shutdown.

Public and private transport went off the roads during complete lockdown.

However, essentials services are exempted from the purview of the lockdown.

Meanwhile, keeping in mind the interest of the candidates for NEET,2020, examination, slated for September 13, the West Bengal Government has decided to withdraw September 12 total lockdown across the state.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said, ” GoWB had initially announced a statewide lockdown on Sep 11th & 12th. “

” Considering the NEET 2020 examination scheduled on 13th, we have received numerous requests from the student community on lifting lockdown norms on 12th, helping ease their travel to examination centres, ” added Ms Banerjee.

” Keeping their interest in mind, while keeping the statewide lockdown as it is on Sep 11th, it has been decided to cancel the lockdown on 12th, so that the students can attend the examination on 13th without any apprehensions or concerns,” Ms Banerjee tweeted and wished

all examinees the very best.

Meanwhile, after more than 50 deaths on an average everyday for the past few days, the pandemic toll in the state has showed lower graph yesterday.

The state on Thursday registered 41 deaths taking the toll to 3771.

According to the latest State Government Health bulletin, the tally touched 1,93,175 with 3,112 new confirmed cases, while the active cases accounted for 23,377.

The number of discharged cases stood at 1,66,027.

With 3035 patients recovering from the infection on Wednesday, the recovery rate of the State further improved to 85.95 per cent.

The bulletin said the total number of samples tested stood at 23,30,283 with 44,347 tested till yesterday.
