Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST-J under the aegis of Dr. B.N.Tripathi, Honˈble Vice Chancellor and guidance of Prof. S.K. Gupta,Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu organized one day “Farmer awareness cum wheat distribution programme” at village Kotli Mirdian, Block-Suchetgarh, R.S.Pura, Jammu on 23rd October, 2024 under SC-SP of NICRA-AICRPAM in order to spread awareness about climate change impact on agriculture and to improve the socio-economic status of the small and marginal farmers by providing input like wheat seed. In this programme more than 100 farmers (male and female) participated.
Dr. Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist and PI of NICRA-AICRPAM informed the farmers about the evidence of climate change from agriculture and its challenges that plague agriculture in the regions. He also emphasized farmers to use the weather based agro-advisories issued biweekly under NICRA-AICRPAM by Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST-J, Chatha in order to reduced input cost in several crop. He also informed and invited the farmers for participation incoming Kissan Mela to be held from 20 to 23rd Nov, 2024 at SKUAST-J, Chatha.
Prof. Shahid Ahamad, Associate Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu was the Chief Guest of the occasion. He highlighted the various activities undertaken by the University for the welfare of the farmers for boosting their income from agriculture enterprises. He also distributed high yielding wheat variety of JAUW 672 seed to about 100 farmers.
Dr. Vijay Bahadur, Chief Scientist, Plant Pathology briefed the farmers regarding management of various diseases in rabi, horticulture and vegetable crops causing huge damages at different growth stages. He also explained farmers to go for seed treatment before sowing of rabi crops with suitable fungicide in order to save the crop from seed borne disease for enhance agriculture productivity.
Dr. A.K.Singh, Professor, Entomology suggested that the farmers spray the crop with proper dose of insecticide at appropriate time in order to manage the major insect pest of wheat, mustard and vegetables and suggested the integrated management of aphid, termite and Armyworm.
Dr. Subash Kashyap, Sr. Scientist, Division of Plant Breeding aware farmer about various recommended wheat varieties for timely and late sown under irrigated conditions in order to increase the seed yield and prodoce quality seed of wheat crop at their own farm. He detailed about the characteristic pattern of variety JAUW-672 released by Division of PBG, SKUAST-J and also distributed in this event. He also stress upon the farmers to apply recommended dose of fertilizer and seed rate.
Dr. Veena Sharma, Technical Officer highlighted soil and water conservation practices to achieve optimal nutrient use efficiency of rabi crop, crop quality and economic returns while reducing off-site transport of nutrients that may impact the environment.
Mr. Suresh Kumar, FCLA and Mr. Dharamvir, AO, Shesh Narayan Kumwat, Ph.D. Scholar of Agrometeorology Section also participated in the programme. Dr. Charu Sharma, YP-II, AICRPAM-NICRA Project registered the farmers and also presented the vote of thanks and appreciated the woman farmers for their participation.
