2.5 lakh prepaid electric meters to be installed in Bihar

Patna, Mar 09 (UNI) Bihar Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav today said that a total of 2.5 lakh prepaid electric meters would be installed in the state by a French company which would also take care of its maintenance for the next six years.

Mr Yadav while replying to debate on budgetary demand of Energy department for the financial year 2021-22 in Assembly, said that state government had decided to install 2.5 lakh prepaid electric meters and a French company had been given the responsibility for the purpose. This company would also look after maintenance for the next six years, he added.

The Minister said that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was prepared to get prepaid electric meters installed two years back. It was a high technology imported from France and maintenance of prepaid electric meters was a major obstacle in the way, he pointed out.

” Despite pressure from Chief Minister Mr Kumar, I was reluctant due to uncertainty over maintenance of prepaid electric meters”, Mr Yadav said, adding that the strong will power of Mr Kumar yielded results, as a way out was found for maintenance and French company had been given job of responsibility to look after maintenance for the next six years since its installation. Alerts would be sent through SMS on cell phones before snapping power connection, he added.

The Minister said that prepaid electric meters could be recharged like cellphones. Facility would remain available for online recharging of smart prepaid electric meters as one does for cellphone. Those facing difficulties in online recharge of prepaid electric meters, could do so at counters available at local electric offices, he added.
