India monitoring developments in Myanmar

New Delhi, Feb. 4 (UNI) India on Thursday said that it was monitoring developments in Myanmar closely where military wrested power in a bloodless coup, declared emergency and detained top leaders of the country earlier this week.

Pointing out that India and Myanmar are neighbours with close cultural and people-to-people ties, bolstered by trade, economic, security and defence related exchanges, Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Anurag Srivastav said that India was also engaged on the issue as a member of of the U.N. Security Council.

“India has extended assistance to Myanmar in its fight against Covid-19 by providing medicines, test kits and vaccines. We remain committed to continuing our humanitarian support for the people in Myanmar in mitigating the health and economic impact of the pandemic,’ the spokesperson said at his virtual media briefing.
