Mamata pays homage to freedom fighter Jatindra Nath Das on his death anniversary.

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday paid homage to freedom fighter Jatindra Nath Das on his death anniversary. “Homage to Jatindra Nath Das, freedom fighter, on his death anniversary,” Ms Banerjee posted on her social networking page. “His 63-day hunger strike in prison was unprecedented in history. As Netaji had rightly remarked, Jatin Das was ‘Dadhichi’ of this era, who sacrificed his life for the country,” she added.

Das breathed his last on September 13, 1929, after a 63-day-long fast for protecting political prisoners from injustice.

Revolutionary freedom fighter, also known as Jatin Das, was arrested by the British on June 14, 1929 in connection with the Lahore Conspiracy Case Only 25 years old at the time, Das had undertaken this hunger strike along with Shaheed Bhagat Singh and other imprisoned freedom fighters in the Lahore Central Jail.

Born on October 27, 1904, Das joined the Anushilan Samiti, a revolutionary group in Bengal, and also participated in Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation movement in 1921, at the tender age of just 17.

On the 50th anniversary of his martyrdom, the Indian Post paid homage to the memory of the young revolutionary by issuing a special postage stamp.
