SC stays arrest of former Punjab DGP in murder case

New Delhi, Sep 15(UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed till further orders, the arrest of former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), Sumedh Singh Saini in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a junior engineer 29 years ago. A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan granted relief to the former top cop in the case.

The Court also sought a response from the respondent, Punjab government on the anticipatory bail plea filed by Saini, who was facing arrest in the 1991, Balwant Multani kidnapping and murder case.

“We imposed a stay on his (Petitioner, Sumedh Singh Saini), arrest till further orders,” the Top Court said.

The three-judge Bench led by Justice Bhushan, however, asked Saini to co-operate with the police in the investigation of the case.

The top court issued notice to the Punjab government on Saini’s petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

After Saini’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Punjab And Haryana High Court, he moved the Top Court seeking relief and immediate anticipatory bail in the case.

The court was hearing the submissions and arguments from Saini and respondent, Punjab government.

It will hear the matter again after likely four weeks.
