NEW DELHI, -Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Shri Devender Yadav said that in the name of University Development Fund and Facilitation and Service Charges in Delhi University, the decision to hike fees of the students has put additional financial burden on lower and middle class families. He said that in the last three years, the latest fee hike has been almost double, which has been objected to even by the teaching community. He said that it is unethical to take development funds, facilitation and service charges from the college students as it is the responsibility of the government to bear it. “This fee hike is against the BJP’s promise of free education from KG to PG, while the Delhi government has not done anything about the arbitrary fee hike by private schools in Delhi,” Shri Yadav added.
Shri Devender Yadav said that it is a matter of grave concern that the students of Delhi University are being mentally and financially harassed by imposing additional burden on them with 20% fee hike. He said that in 2025, an additional Rs 3000 will be collected from the students by increasing the University Development Fund and facilitation and service charges by Rs 1500 each, and this increase will badly affect the students from Dalit community, deprived classes, weaker sections, farmers, labourers, minorities, EWS, backward classes etc. “The BJP Government is trying to deprive education to the poor. By privatizing education, the fees in private institutions have already reached such a high level that no poor person can afford to teach his child in such institutions and now the BJP Government has increased the fees in Delhi University, which will deny higher education to people from lower and middle class families.
Shri Devender Yadav said that the slogan of BJP that “Padhega India Tabhi Badhega India” has become a meaningless rhetoric. He said that when the BJP Government increases the fees in Government educational institutions, how would children of common Indians be able to study in colleges and universities? He said that the fee hike will adversely affect the education of girls, as there is still a mindset among the people to teach sons and not daughters by paying high fees. He said that with the fee hike, the BJP slogan of “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” has become irrelevant. He said that due to the anti-education policy of the BJP, the dream of daughters of economically weaker families to get higher education after 12th will be shattered..
Shri Devender Yadav said that colleges are being forced to approach Higher Education Financing Agency for creation of infrastructure as Delhi University does not create any infrastructure for colleges, due to which the game of collecting huge fees from students in the name of development funds, facilitation and service charges is being played out.
Shri Devender Yadav said that the increase in the fees of various courses like B Tech, BA, BCom and PhD from 3.70 per cent to 60.22 per cent will hit students pursuing technical and higher education in Delhi University very hard. For instance, he said, the fee for BTech first year has gone up from Rs. 2.16 lakh to Rs. 2.24 lakh after an increase of 3.70 per cent. Similarly, the fee for PhD students has been increased by 60.22 per cent.
