NEW DELHI, August 12, 2025 — Shri Devender Yadav, President of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, highlighted the challenges the Delhi Government faces in meeting the Supreme Court’s directive to capture all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR within two months. He pointed out that the government, led by Rekha Gupta, has not fulfilled its election promises over the past six months, making compliance unlikely.
Yadav stressed that Delhi lacks permanent shelters, sufficient funding, and accurate data on the stray dog population, which unofficially numbers around 10 lakh. He acknowledged the serious issue of stray dogs and frequent dog bite cases across the city. However, echoing the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Shri Rahul Gandhi, Yadav emphasized that simply removing stray dogs would be a setback to humane, science-based policies that have been in place for years. Rahul Gandhi has advocated for shelters, sterilization, vaccinations, and community care as effective, cruelty-free ways to ensure public safety.
Yadav also criticized the current Kejriwal administration for ignoring the growing stray dog problem while focusing mainly on corruption. He condemned the lack of action from both the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the state government in addressing animal welfare concerns. He urged the Rekha Gupta Government to adopt a compassionate approach by establishing proper facilities and allocating adequate funds to safely implement the Supreme Court’s orders. As Rahul Gandhi rightly stated, public safety and animal welfare must go together.
