Jammu, Sept 11: BJP State Vice President Rajeev Charak has urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to urgently extend financial relief to farmers and private vehicle owners reeling under the impact of recent floods and natural calamities.
Charak said the devastation has shattered daily life as roads and bridges have been washed away, cutting off mobility for weeks. Passenger vehicles and load carriers have been idle for over a month, leaving owners unable to pay loan installments. He appealed that at least three months of installments be waived to ease their burden.
Highlighting the plight of farmers, Charak explained that fertile land in hilly areas has been swept away, while vast stretches in the plains now lie buried under layers of sand, making them uncultivable. Farmers, already stripped of their livelihood, should be permitted to sell the sand deposited on their fields to recover part of their losses, he suggested.
He added that vegetable supplies from hilly regions—normally crucial during the rainy season—have been destroyed, and farmers dependent on a single annual crop have lost everything. Charak pressed for a dedicated relief package to help them survive this crisis. Emphasizing that the disaster has also hurt several small businesses, he called for a comprehensive survey of damages to ensure every affected section receives support. While the Centre has been consistently providing disaster relief funds, Charak stressed that it is now the state government’s responsibility to prioritize vehicle owners and farmers and roll out an effective relief plan to help people rebuild their lives quickly.
