Leh, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, praised the Defence Institute of High-Altitude Research (DIHAR) for transforming agriculture in the cold desert region. He said DIHAR’s innovations have made it possible for both Army personnel and local residents to get fresh vegetables even during freezing winters.
During his visit to the DIHAR Centre in Leh, accompanied by First Lady Smt. Bindu Gupta, LG Kavinder noted that the institute’s work in specialised greenhouses, solar-based heating systems, crop acclimatisation, and livestock research has strengthened food security and boosted socio-economic growth.
He added that the introduction of the Ladakh Greenhouse model has reduced dependence on packaged food and enabled the cultivation of more than 100 vegetable varieties and several fruits, ensuring year-round availability.
Director DIHAR, Dr. O.P. Chaurasia, briefed the Governor about the institute’s journey since 1960 and its close partnership with local farmers to meet the Army’s fresh food needs. The Governor also visited the Vegetable and Animal Research Units, appreciating the role of scientists in improving the quality of life in Ladakh’s extreme climate.
