The Agriculture Summit SKUAST Jammu marked a significant step toward strengthening the agricultural ecosystem of Jammu and Kashmir. The three-day summit was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who underlined the importance of the “Agriculture First” policy in achieving a developed India and an Aatma-Nirbhar Jammu & Kashmir.

Addressing farmers, scientists, and policymakers, the Lieutenant Governor described agriculture and allied sectors as the ultimate stabilizing force for any developing society. Amid global uncertainties and climate-related disruptions, he emphasized that agriculture remains the foundation of resilience and prosperity.

Agriculture Summit SKUAST Jammu Highlights AI-Driven Farming

At the Agriculture Summit SKUAST Jammu, the focus was firmly placed on AI-powered advanced agriculture. The Lieutenant Governor stressed that technological innovation must go hand in hand with agricultural development. He called for affordable and accessible AI tools capable of predicting crop output using weather, soil, and crop data, especially for small and marginal farmers.

According to him, deploying IoT sensors and satellite imagery can help create digital farm models that enable precision irrigation, potentially reducing water use by 50–60 percent. AI-based advisory systems could also increase crop yields by 15–30 percent while lowering input costs significantly.

Experts at the summit observed that digital innovations and data-driven decision systems are crucial for climate-smart agriculture, particularly in regions like Jammu and Kashmir where terrain and weather conditions vary widely.

Strengthening Dairy, Seed Security and Circular Farming

The summit also highlighted efforts to boost the dairy sector in the Union Territory. Plans are underway to enhance milk processing capacity, reinforcing value addition and rural income generation.

The Lieutenant Governor directed officials and agricultural scientists to establish village-level seed banks with climate-resilient local varieties. He emphasized that preserving and promoting quality seeds is critical for ensuring long-term food security.

Another major theme was circular farming. Authorities advocated for converting crop residues into high-protein animal feed and organic manure, thereby improving soil health and reducing dependency on external inputs. Such integrated farming systems are expected to lower production costs while enhancing sustainability.

Platform for Farmers, Scientists and Industry

The summit provided a collaborative platform where farmers interacted directly with agricultural scientists, startups, and agri-industry representatives. Demonstrations of drone technology, advanced farm tools, and innovative crop practices were key attractions.

Officials from the agricultural university noted that the event aimed to connect farmers with government schemes, agribusiness opportunities, and emerging technologies. Exhibitions, field visits, and interactive sessions ensured practical exposure for participants.

Agricultural experts also highlighted the potential of improved rice cultivars and direct seeded rice technology in the Jammu region. This method is considered cost-effective, water-efficient, and relatively resistant to pests and diseases.

Addressing Concerns Over Trade Policies

Responding to concerns regarding recent trade agreements, it was clarified that farmers’ interests remain protected. Authorities assured stakeholders that appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent any adverse impact on domestic agricultural producers.

Such reassurances are seen as crucial at a time when global trade dynamics are evolving and competitiveness in agricultural exports is becoming increasingly important.

What Impact Will This News Have?

The Agriculture Summit SKUAST Jammu is expected to have a long-term impact on agricultural modernization in the region. By integrating artificial intelligence and digital technologies into farming practices, productivity and farmer incomes could witness substantial improvement.

If initiatives such as seed banks, dairy expansion, and circular farming models are implemented effectively, they may strengthen rural economies and enhance sustainability. Ultimately, the Agriculture Summit SKUAST Jammu could serve as a bridge between policy vision, scientific innovation, and grassroots farming communities.

Conclusion

The summit in Jammu represents more than a ceremonial gathering; it signals a strategic push toward technology-driven and farmer-centric agricultural reform. The convergence of innovation, policy support, and scientific research indicates a forward-looking roadmap for the sector.

The Agriculture Summit SKUAST Jammu underscores that a resilient agricultural base is indispensable for economic stability and national growth. The challenge ahead lies in translating these policy directions into measurable outcomes on the ground.
