FASTag mandatory for vehicle owners to avail discount in toll charges

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday made it mandatory for vehicle owners to get FASTag, the electronic toll collection device, in order to avail discount in toll charges including the return trip within 24 hours.

A notification amending the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules 2008, was issued on Monday to the effect. The step is aimed at boosting the culture of digital payments in the country.

“In order to further promote digital payments on the fee plazas on the national highways, it is decided that discount for users who make return journey within 24 hours and all other local exemptions shall be provided only if the vehicle carries a valid functional FASTag,” said an official statement.

This means that a valid and functional FASTag will enable the driver to automatically get the discount, in case it’s available to avail, for the return journey within 24 hours.

The statement added, “For discount on return journey within 24 hours, it would be through FASTag or such other device and automatic and no requirement for a pass. For discounts on all other cases, having a valid FASTag is made necessary.”
