Sensex drops 84.88 points

Mumbai, May 2 : The BSE Sensex on Monday fell further by 84.88 points to settle at 56,975.99 as selling was seen in consumer durables, telecom, IT and auto stocks. The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too slipped 33.45 points at 17,069.10. The Sensex dropped 631 points to open at 56,429.45. It plummeted 648 points at 56,412 points, the day’s low, before closing at 56,975.99, easing 84.88 points from its previous close. The Sensex registered the day’s high and low at 57,054.23 and 56,412.62 points respectively. The Nifty recorded the day’s high and low at 17,092.25 and 16,917.25 respectively. Sectoral indices like consumer durable, telecom, IT and auto dragged the market further. In scrips, Titan was a major loser down by 2.95 per cent to Rs 2,386.60 followed by Wipro by 2.74 per cent to Rs 495.05, Tech Mahindra by 1.87 per cent to Rs 1,233.05, Infosys by 1.70 per cent to Rs 1,541.25 and Asian Paints by 1.27 per cent to Rs 3,198. The gainers were NTPC by 2.54 per cent to Rs 157.50, Powergrid by 2.20 per cent to Rs 232.60, Tata Steel by 1.84 per cent to Rs 1,295.10 and HDFC by 1.55 per cent to Rs 2,262.70. The Mid Cap declined by 0.47 per cent and Small Cap by 0.87 per cent. In 30 scrips, 11 advanced while 19 declined. In Asian Market, Japan fell by 0.11 per cent and Australia by 1.31 per cent.
