India records 55,838 new cases of coronavirus, tally crosses 77 lakh-mark

New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) India recorded 55,838 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours that has pushed the country’s overall caseload to 77,06,946, Union Health Ministry updated on Thursday. Meanwhile, the death toll has soared to 1,16,616 with 702 fresh fatalities, the ministry further reported.

Of the fresh fatalities, maximum 180 were reported from Maharashtra, 88 from Karnataka, 64 from West Bengal, 47 from Delhi, 44 from Chhattisgarh, 41 from Uttar Pradesh, 39 from Tamil Nadu, 27 from Andhra Pradesh, 26 from Kerala and 23 from Punjab.

The active cases saw a drop of 24,278 since Wednesday and currently stood at 7,15,812.

The front-line medics were able to save 79,415 more lives, taking the total recovery count till now to 68,74,518 which is 89.20 per cent of the caseload.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 14,69,984 samples were tested on Wednesday, taking the total cumulative samples tested since the beginning of the pandemic till Monday to 9,86,70,363.
