New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) India on Saturday became the third country to cross the grim milestone of 1 lakh deaths due to novel coronavirus after 1,069 more people lost their lives during the past 24 hours. In the same period, 79,476 new cases were reported pan India, pushing the country caseload to 64,73,545.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, a total of 75,628 people recovered in the past one day surging the recoveries to 54,27,706. The current recovery rate stands at 83.70 per cent. The gap between recovered cases and active cases has crossed 44 lakh (44,82,710). With increasing number of recoveries, this gap is continuously widening. The figure of 54 lakhs accounts for 21 per cent of the global recovered cases, while its share in the total cases stands at 18.6 per cent.

India has maintained its global position with one of the lowest case fatality rates (CFR) when compared to several other countries. While the global CFR stands at 2.97 per cent as on date, the comparative figure for India is 1.56 per cent. The deaths per million population in India is one of the lowest in the world. While the global average is 130 deaths /million population, India is reporting 73 deaths /million population.

For the 12th successive day, India has sustained its steady trend of maintaining the active cases below the 10-lakh mark. There are 9,44,996 active cases in the country which comprises 14.74 per cent of the total cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 11,32,675 samples were tested in the past 24 hours, taking the total cumulative samples tested since the beginning of the pandemic till Friday to 7,78,50,403.

Of the new cases, Maharashtra contributed the maximum with nearly 16,000 cases. Kerala surged to second place with 9,258 new cases while Karnataka reported more than 8000 daily new cases. The fresh cases break up is: Maharashtra – 15,591, Karnataka – 8,793, Kerala – 9,258, Andhra Pradesh – 6,555, Tamilnadu – 5,595, Uttar Pradesh – 3,894, Odisha – 3,600, West Bengal – 3,310, Delhi – 2,920 and Chhattisgarh – 3,637.

Maharashtra continues to remain the worst affected state with maximum 1416513 cases followed by Andhra Pradesh 7,06,790, Karnataka, 6,20,630, Tamil Nadu 6,08,885, Uttar Pradesh 4,06,995, Delhi 285672, West Bengal 263634, Odisha 226334, Kerala 2,13,499 and Telangana 1,97,327.

Nearly 85 per cent of freshly reported deaths are concentrated in ten State/UTs. Of the new fatalities, maximum 424 were reported from Maharashtra, followed by 125 from Karnataka, 67 from Tamil Nadu, 53 each from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, 50 from Punjab, 37 from Delhi, 36 from Madhya Pradesh and 31 from Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, globally the cases have reached 3,45,03,125, the Johns Hopkins University said.
