Odisha reports 1637 new infections, 62 fatalities in past 24 hours

Bhubaneswar, Jul 26 : The daily covid load in Odisha further dipped to 1637 in the past 24 hours registering a 2.19 per cent test positivity rate while 62 more covid patients succumbed to the virus during the period.

Health and Family Welfare department sources said the covid tally in the state today surged to 9,69,185 with 9,45,177 recoveries. The fatalities jumped to 5574, and the active cases further reduced to 18,381.

Only three districts in the state reported more than 100 new cases in the past 24 hours with Khordha registering the highest number of 350 cases followed by Cuttack ( 250) and Angul (100).

These three coastal districts together accounted for 42.7 per cent of the total positive cases in the state.

Sources said a record number of 42 covid patients succumbed to the virus in Khordha district alone in the past 24 hours recording over 67 per cent of total deaths in the state during the period.

Next to Khordha, ten fatalities were reported from Sundargarh district while Keonjhar district registered four deaths. These three districts have reported a little over 90 per cent of the total deaths in the past 24 hours.

Although the state recorded a 2.19 per cent test positivity rate today, two districts- Puri and Balasore recorded a 5.2 per cent and 5.1 per cent test positivity rate respectively.

Among the 28 other districts which have registered less than 5 per cent TPR, two districts such as Boudh and Nuapada have reported zero per cent TPR.

As far as the active cases are concerned, Khordha district with 4548 active cases, highest in the state has been put under Red Zone while Balasore and Jajpur with 1273 and 1215 active cases respectively are under Orange zone and the rest 26 districts with less than 1000 active cases have been declared as Green Zone.

These four coastal districts have reported altogether 9478 active cases, almost 51.56 per cent of the total active cases in the state.

Meanwhile, as announced both government and private schools were reopened today in the state for Class X and XII students. The School and Mass Education Departments also allowed the hostels to reopen today for the class X and XII students. The students whose parents had given consent will be only allowed to stay in the hostels, the government circular clarified.
