Priyanka accuses UP govt of low Covid testing

Lucknow, May 18 (UNI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday hit out at the Yogi Adityanath dispensation over the alleged low Covid-19 testing in Uttar Pradesh, and asked if the government was preparing to make way for a third wave and then fight it.
Her attack on the government came a day after the Allahabad High Court said the entire medical system in villages and small cities of Uttar Pradesh is at God’s mercy (‘Ram bharose’). “Only 800-1,000 RT-PCR tests are being conducted every day for the 32 lakh population of Bijnor. The honourable high court has said that 4,000-5,000 RT-PCR tests should be done daily in a district like Bijnore or else we are inviting the third wave,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi on Tuesday.
“Is the UP government preparing to make way for the third wave and then fight it,” the Congress general secretary said, tagging media reports on the high court’s observations. If a self-praising government was not there in Lucknow, it would have tried to look at the reality of COVID-19 in the ‘Indira Gramin Kshetra’ just 35 km away, ” Ms Vadra said in another tweet in Hindi and shared a media report on it.
“Neither there is testing, nor treatment, nor medical kits, but the government says that everything is fit,” she said.
The Allahabad High Court had made the ‘Ram Bharose’ observation while hearing a PIL over the coronavirus spread and the condition of quarantine centres in the state. A high court bench of justices Siddharth Verma and Ajit Kumar made the observation while taking into account the death of Santosh Kumar (64), who was admitted to an isolation ward at a Meerut hospital. Gandhi and other Opposition leaders have hit out at the state government over the handling of the COVID-19 situation, while the UP government has been rejecting all such criticism.
Meanwhile the Congress on Tuesday also accused the Yogi Adityanath-led government of hiding the real figure of deaths due to COVID-19 in the state and said that it has no right to stay in power if it cannot provide proper health care facilities to its people. The Congress allegations came two days after it accused the Gujarat government of hiding the real figures of COVID-19 deaths.
Addressing a virtual press conference in New Delhi, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “As per the government official records, in Lucknow till date 2,268 people have died due to COVID-19. While in the last three months 13,000 death certificates have been issued.” She said that between April 1 to May 15 this year, in the span of 45 days 7,890 death certificates have been issued while between February 15 and March 31 in the span of two months 5,970 death certificates were issued.
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Aradhana Mishra said that she is saddened to see the condition of the state. Slamming the BJP-led state government, she said that this government works on three D’s. “Each D stands for denial of facts, destroying of evidence and data manipulation,” Mishra said, adding that the government is working on three D’s instead of working on COVID-19 pandemic crisis.
Questioning the government, the Congress leader said, “Why has the government authorised the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to issue death certificates? The certificates have always been issued by the Nagar Nigam (municipal corporation).”
“It’s a clear attempt by the government to hide the actual death figures,” she alleged. Hitting out at the UP government, she said that if the government was not able to provide better health care facilities, then it should have provided proper management for cremation at least. “In a heart wrenching incident from Balia in the state, few policemen administered the funeral by burning tyres,” she said. She said that the government has “failed” completely in Uttar Pradesh and especially in Lucknow as people are unable to get proper medical care. “Such a government has no right to stay in power and the Chief Minister (Yogi Adityanath) should resign immediately taking moral responsibility,”
