NEW DELHI, Delhi Congress president Shri Devender Yadav criticized the BJP government for burdening common people with higher metro fares and heavy tolls on the UER-2. With DTC buses running at a record low, commuters are forced to use private vehicles, worsening Delhi’s air pollution.
At a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, Yadav highlighted that the DTC fleet has dropped from 8,040 buses in January 2024 to just 5,835 by July 2025, while the government plans to retire 3,897 more buses next year. Despite promises to add 5,000 electric buses, only 785 have been introduced in 7 months, leaving commuters struggling with long waits and overcrowded buses.
Yadav also condemned the high toll on UER-2 Dwarka, where farmers, whose land was acquired for the project, are forced to pay Rs 350 for 20 km, more than double the national average. “We stand with the farmers and demand free travel for their vehicles,” he said.
He further criticized the metro fare hike, implemented without public consultation, alleging it shifts the burden of losses onto ordinary citizens while benefiting private agencies. He called out the BJP and AAP for failing to maintain DTC services and ignoring commuters’ interests.
Shri Anil Bhardwaj added that both the AAP and BJP have weakened the city’s public transport system instead of expanding it, directly affecting the middle and lower-income commuters.
