NEW DELHI, July 1, 2025—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Devender Singh said that when the common people have been struggling with various every day problems due to the inaction and incompetence of the BJP Government, which has not fulfilled any of its election promises, CM Rekha Gupta was pursuing agendas that do not improve the life of the common people, as she seeks change of name of the Old Delhi Railway Station for which she has even written a letter to the Union Railway Minister. He said that change of names of various places and institutions seemed to have become an obsession with her, while civic facilities and infrastructure deteriorate in the Capital. He said that instead of improving passenger amenities in these stations, Railways have increased the fares which only exposes the anti-poor policies of the BJP Government.
Shri Devender Yadav said that CM Rekha Gupta should have asked the Railway Minister to roll back the increase in rail fares, which became effective from July 1, as it will adversely affect the common people besides resulting in all-round increase in the prices of goods moved through the Railways.
Shri Devender Yadav recalled the statement of Prime Minister Modi that “hawai chappell walon ko hawai yatra karayenge” (those who walk in hawai chappels will be offered facilities to travel by air) which has not been fulfilled, and now with the hike in train fares, even journey by train will be beyond the capacity of the common people, who have been cornered from all sides due to the anti-poor policies of the BJP Government at the Centre and in Delhi.
Shri Devender Yadav said that with the increase in fares, Railways will collect an additional Rs 92,820 crore this financial year by emptying the pockets of the poor people who depend on Railways for their short and long-duration travels. He said that Rs 20 hike for AC ticket for travel upto 1000km, Rs 10 for sleeper class and Rs 5 to 15 for general class will affect the common people more about which the BJP Government has no concern. He said that during election time, BJP makes tall promises to the common people like air travel and fast travel by trains and other myriad facilities, only to betray them after coming to power.
Shri Devender Yadav said that without improving the condition of the tracks, the high-speed Vande Bharat Express trains were introduced but due to the high fares, these trains were running empty with complaints about the quality of food served in the trains, and accidents becoming a common occurrence about which the Railways do not seemed to be much concerned.
Shri Devender Yadav said that when numerous civic issues requiring the urgent attention of the Rekha Gupta Government hang in balance, the Delhi Government was focusing on pointless issues which neither improve the facilities in hospitals, railway stations, congested streets and broken roads and clogged drains nor better the lives of the common people.
