Engineers’ Day 2025: Harnessing Deep Tech to Fix Sewage and Water Challenges By Mr. Y.R. Nagaraja, Managing Director, Ramky Infrastructure Ltd
India, 15 September 2025: As we celebrate the 58th Engineers’ Day, it’s time to salute the ingenuity and commitment of engineers across the country — from those who built our infrastructure to those shaping tomorrow’s smart cities and water systems. Your work strengthens not only roads and urban spaces but also the future of sustainable growth.
This year’s theme, “Deep Tech & Engineering Excellence: Driving India’s Techade”, highlights urgent challenges. India produces over 72,000 million litres of urban sewage daily, yet less than 30% is treated. Meanwhile, nearly half of drinking water in many cities never reaches consumers due to leaks, theft, faulty meters, or unbilled connections. These losses are more than financial—they threaten public health, water security, and resilience.
Solving these issues demands innovation, integration, and impactful engineering. It’s no longer enough to just construct; we must construct wisely. Wastewater treatment plants should recover resources while cleaning water. Smart grids can detect leaks instantly and use predictive tools for efficient management. Industrial parks should operate with circular water systems and renewable energy. Policies must ensure these systems are not only built but function effectively.
On this Engineers’ Day, I urge engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders to collaborate. Every drop of water must be valued, every network optimized, and every industrial project designed sustainably. Together, we can make India’s Techade a model of efficiency, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
