Faculty of Veterinary Sciences organizes training program for dairy farmers in Rainfed
Under the dynamic leadership of Prof. B.N. Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-
Jammu, the Division of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal
Husbandry, SKUAST-Jammu, organized a training program for dairy farmers. The event was
held at Village-Dera Ganotra, Samba, as part of the Development of Rainfed Area (Sub-
component: Promotion of Livestock) under the HADP. In rainfed areas, agriculture crops are
severely affected by a lack of irrigation water, making livestock the main source of income and
livelihood for farmers. The training session was attended by more than 50 small dairy farmers.
Dr. Neelesh Sharma, Principal Investigator and Professor & Head of Veterinary
Medicine, delivered a talk on various aspects of dairy farming. His primary objective was to
enhance the basic knowledge of livestock farmers in the rainfed area to improve their livelihood.
Farmers raised numerous problems related to livestock rearing, health, and management. They
were also informed about various Government schemes available for livestock farmers, so they
can benefit efficiently. Farmers were sensitized about the importance of routine deworming and
vaccination for critical diseases such as FMD, HS, BQ, and LSD. Farmers were motivated for
regular vaccination of their livestock to reduce the occurrence of these diseases and economic
losses can be reduced. The team, led by Dr. Neelesh Sharma, also conducted door-to-door visits
to better understand the farmers’ problems. During these visits, the team examined various
animals and suggested suitable treatments. Common issues observed included tick infestation,
mastitis, and various reproductive-related problems. During the training program, various
medicines and nutritional supplements were distributed to the farmers to encourage the regular
practice of deworming, controlling tick infestation, and improving the reproductive efficiency of
dairy animals.
