VC SKUAST-Jammu Inaugurates Carp Brood Stock Pond

Prof. J.P Sharma, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu inaugurated and operationalized the Carp Brood Stock Pond constructed at Fisheries Unit, Chatha campus under the NABARD funded Infrastructure development project entitled “Strengthening of existing fisheries infrastructure at SKUAST-Jammu to boost fish production”.  Vice Chancellor said that fish seed production facilities in the shape of hatchery is a right approach to facilitate the availability of quality seed of cultivable carp species to the farmers and it will also boost the fish production of the Jammu region. He appreciated the efforts made by Fisheries Unit for the promotion of fishery sector. Dr. Sahar Masud, Professor and In-charge Fisheries Unit informed that the carp (Indian and exotic) constitute a major share in the culture fishery in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir. In spite of huge availability of suitable water resources for aquaculture, fish production in the Jammu and Kashmir is very low which needs to be enhanced to meet the demand of fish locally.
