‘Approach Upper Yamuna River Board,’ SC tells DJB on water shortage issue

New Delhi, May 7 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Friday told the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to approach the Upper Yamuna River Board on its petition regarding the acute shortage of water supply from Haryana and Punjab.

A three-judge Bench of Justice Nageswara Rao, Justice Bopanna and Justice Ramasubramanian said that the apex court gives liberty to the petitioner to approach Upper Yamuna River Board and the DJB shall consider representation to be made expeditiously.

“We haven’t expressed any opinion on merits of the matter,” the bench clarified.

The water board had sought an urgent hearing into the case and submitted to the top court that if the water supply situation does not improve in Delhi, it may have to restrict the supply of water to hospitals in the national capital, which are housing a large number of COVID-19 cases.

The board also said that it is facing an acute shortage of water supply from neighbouring Haryana and Punjab.
