COVID-19 spread slowdowns in India with 53,370 new cases, 670 deaths

New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) India recorded 53,370 fresh COVID-19 cases and 650 more deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday. With the new additions, the total number of cases in the second most-infected country surged to 78,14,682 while the death toll reached 1,17,956.

On the brighter side, the active cases are below seven lakhs and counted at 6,80,680, which comprises 8.71 per cent of the total caseload. The fatality rate stands at 1.51 per cent while recovery at 89.78 per cent. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, as many as 10,13,82,564 samples were tested in the past 24 hours.

Maharashtra continues to remain worst-affected with 16,32,544 COVID-19 cases and 43,514 deaths, followed by Andhra Pradesh where 8,00,684 cases have been recorded so far including 6,544 fatalities. Karnataka at the third spot has counted 7,93,907 cases and 10,840 deaths.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has warned the next three months will be crucial owing to festivals and winters.

Meanwhile, pharma major AstraZeneca announced that the trial of its vaccine candidate, developed with the Britain’s University of Oxford, has resumed in the US, the only country where it remained suspended following a participant’s illness six weeks ago.

The COVID-19 situation is becoming grimmer in the worst-hit US as it reported the sharpest spike of 84,218 new cases.
