Encephalitis experience will help in controlling COVID wave in UP:Yogi

Lucknow, May 19 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has exuded confidence of having the perfect machinery in place to control and restrict the possible third wave of COVID-19, as the state will be using its experience of controlling the Japanese Encephalitis.

Regarding the arrangements to tackle the third COVID wave, which the experts fear will affect children more, Adityanath, while addressing a high level meeting here on Wednesdsy, said, “Our experience in tackling the Japanese Encephalitis will help us in controlling the spread of third wave of COVID-19,” adding, “My Government has prepared an action plan to effectively check the third wave.”

A 100-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ward should be prepared in all medical colleges of the state.

The State Level Health Expert Advisory Committee has presented an assessment regarding the equipment, human resources and other requirements for the establishment of PICU. In this regard, the CM has ordered his officials to take immediate action after consulting with the committee.

“The encephalitis, which had wreaked havoc in the state, especially in the Eastern UP, for many decades, had been controlled by 95 percent,” the CM said adding, “On the basis of Encephalitis experiences, the instructions have been given to protect children from the third wave of COVID-19 by establishing PICU in every medical college.”

These beds will be small in size and have railing on the sides. Severely infected children will be provided with treatment and oxygen.

The BRD Medical College, BHU and KGMU and the Health Department have experience in setting up PICU in Gorakhpur-Basti divisions areas mostly affected by encephalitis. Taking the benefit of this experience, pediatricians, technicians, paramedical staff of all district hospitals and medical colleges should be trained.

The CM on Wednesday stated that phase training of ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers should also be done and quality of training should be maintained.

Mr Adityanath also said if needed, assistance will be needed from ex-servicemen, retired officers. He also said that students receiving medical education can train and provide teleconsultation to the patients.

Ensuring proper post-covid treatment, Mr Adityanath asked the Health Department that Post-Covid Ward should be prepared in all ‘dedicated COVID Hospitals’. These patients must be assigned a bed with requisite oxygen availability. Along with proper medical care, arrangements should also be made for food to such patients.
