J&K pays Rs 36 lakh to kin of dead infants

New Delhi, April 29 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday said the Jammu and Kashmir administration paid Rs 36 lakh as relief to the kin of 12 infants who died after consuming spurious cough syrup in Ramnagar in Udhampur district. The Commission had registered a case on the basis of a complaint on April 30, 2020. The incident took place in December 2019-January 2020. “Initially, in response to the notices of the Commission, the UT administration maintained that there was no scope for any complacency on the part of its Drugs Control Department,” the rights body said in a statement. It was argued that the production of quality drugs was primarily the responsibility of the manufacturing firm. The NHRC said it found the contention unacceptable and observed that there was no denial of the lapse in the case though the drugs department did not want to own up the responsibility. The department failed to keep a regular vigil on the contamination and contents of the medicine sold within its jurisdiction and hence it was liable for the negligence and to pay Rs 3 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased children, the Commission said. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court upheld the NHRC recommendations.
