SC stays Kerala HC gag order against activist Rehana Fathima sharing views on media

New Delhi, Feb 9 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a Kerala High Court order restricting controversial activist Rehana Fathima from printing, posting or publishing her views on media.

Apex Court bench headed by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, while hearing an appeal filed by Fathima, agreed to stay the blanket ban of Kerala HC on her from publishing, disseminating or sharing any material of her comments through media.

However, the Apex Court retained the High Court’s condition that she should not use any media to hurt religious sentiments or feelings.

The Kerala High Court had, in November last year, passed strictures against Fathima after she posted a video of a cookery show in which she used ‘gomatha’ as a synonym for reference to meat.

The bench headed by Justice Sunil Thomas, had observed that the choice of the word prima facie appears to be ill-motivated and purposefully made and likely to hurt the religious sentiments.
