SKUAST-Jammu organizes two days Training cum Awareness camp at Barakh, Dehote, and Kotla villages of Reasi district

September 2-3, Jammu: The team of Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, SKUAST-Jammu, under the benefaction of Professor B. N. Tripathi, Honorable Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu, under the supervision of Dr S. K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu, the division of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, R. S. Pura, Jammu organized ‘Training cum Awareness camp w. e. f  2nd to 3rd August 2024 for Villages Barakh, Dehote and Kotla, district Reasi. Day one of the camps was organized at Barakh, followed by Dehote and Kotla on day two (Tuesday). The camp was held under the DBT, Government of India project entitled “Socio-Economic Upliftment of Poor Farmers through Animal Husbandry using Scientific Interventions in Jammu Province” under the purview of SKUAST-Jammu.

Sardar Gurudev Singh, Progressive farmer from Barakh, welcomed the team. The PI, Dr Nrip Kishore Pankaj informed the villagers about the project and the very aim of the camp.

Three scientists were available during the camp to interact with the farmers. Dr S. R. Upadhyay, Professor, Veterinary Medicine, F.V.Sc & A.H, SKUAST-J, R. S. Pura, talked with the farmers of Barakh, Dehote, and Kotla about general management-associated diseases among cattle and buffaloes including goats. Farmers raised the issues of mastitis among milch cattle. Dr Upadhyay mentioned various managemental errors that lead to mastitis among the cows.  He also spoke about many health issues that are associated with endoparasites (कृमी) and ectoparasites (चिन्चीरे) which should be considered during the management of the livestock. Further, Dr Upadhyay prompted the farmers for regular timely vaccination to their livestock against infectious diseases like FMD, HS, BQ etc.

Dr. Sharad Kumar, Professor, Veterinary Gynecology and Obstetrics, F.V.Sc & A.H, SKUAST-J, R. S. Pura, talked to the local farmers later. Farmers showed concerns about anestrus, and repeat breeding among the animals. Dr Sharad encouraged the farmers to go for balanced nutrition and parasitic control, as these are the menace, that make animals struggle with productivity and reproductivity-related issues.

Dr. N. K. Pankaj, PI & Professor & Head, Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology F.V.Sc & A.H, SKUAST-J, R. S. Pura, talked of the toxicities of toxic fodderand measures to avoid such a scenario. He also apprised the farmers about poisonous weeds like Gajar gansh, Panchfool buti, jangli pudina etc.  He also stated that backyard poultry, cattle, and goat farming can be profitable if considered entrepreneurship by local folks’.

The local folks were happy about the camp and valued the regular visit of the scientists from SKUAST-Jammu to Bharakh, Dehote, Kotla, Reasi, Jammu

Sardar Gurudev Singh, a Progressive farmer, Bharakh acknowledged the event and requested more such events including clinical camps in the future. He also expressed gratitude for the regular visits of the team from SKUAST-J, R. S. Pura, Jammu.

Mrs. Vaishno Devi, Panch at Dehote, and Mrs. Asha Devi at Kotla also appreciated the regular visits in terms of training and clinical camps of the scientists of SKUAST-Jammu. PI also visited the beneficiaries’ residences in their respective villages.
