Toll rises to 11 in TN during current spell of rain, total 59 deaths since onset of NE monsoon

Chennai, Nov 29: One more person died of wall collapse in Tamil Nadu
during the last 24 hours taking the number of deaths during the current spell of showers to 11 on Monday, even as the State reported 59 deaths due to rains and floods ever since the onset of the Northeast monsoon.

Talking to reporters after reviewing the rain situation, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management KKSSR Ramachandran said the death was reported from Cuddalore district.

He said so far 59 people have lost their lives due to rains and floods ever since the onset of Northeast monsoon in the State and a compensation of R 2.36 crore has been given as solatium to these families.

Mr Ramachandran said 13 injured people were given an assistance of Rs 55,900. During the current spell of rains, 5,600 and 209 poultry and cattle deaths respectively were reported across the state, while 1,074 hutments and 189 houses were partially damaged and 65 hutments were totally damaged.

Stating that Rs 2.84 crore was given as compensation for the death of 2,783 cattles, he said Rs 10.17 crore was given as relief to 24,810 hutments which were damaged in rains.

The government is taking expeditious steps to provide compensation to the remaining affected families. More than 15,000 people were housed in 182 relief camps in Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Ranipet, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Trichy, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts.

In Chennai city, 1,503 people were housed in 13 relief camps where they were provided with food and medicine. Chief Minister M K Stalin visited the flood affected areas in Chengalpet and Kanchipuram
districts and in few areas of the city and distributed relief materials to those housed in relief
camps.
