TSF calls off 12-hour bandh

Agartala, The Twipra Students Federation (TSF) called off its dawn to dusk Tripura bandh on Monday after assurances of action against the police access to two college students on January 13 last on the charge of obstructing Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s carcade.
John Debbarma, TSF General Secretary, said that Information Minister Sushanta Chowdhury met with TSF leaders on Sunday late at night and after his intervention, the police filed an FIR against the erring traffic constable Kishore Banik at night after three days of the incident.
Referring to the action of Assam Chief Minister against Deputy Commissioner of Nogoan district two days ago for stopping traffic during CM’s movement, he said, “It’s most unfortunate when Assam CM wanted to move with people without any inconvenience to public, Tripura CM doing a reverse and for his movement in a busy road police assaulted innocent students and as of now he didn’t express regret in public.”
However, police have assured to withdraw the case filed against the students and the case which the victims had filed would be investigated while the information minister has promised to order an immediate magistrate level enquiry into the incident and adequate compensation would be provided to the victims besides all medical expenses, Debbarma said.
“We have made it clear that the attitude of most of the police personnel including some top level functionaries is not at all pro-people and abusive in nature to the common men. They harassed the people beyond law and implicated false charges and even in a few recent incidents it was established that police are doing criminal activities but government is not doing enough to stop it,” he underlined.
John further alleged that police had made them wait till 10.30 PM of that night and received the complaint of the victim but until the minister intervened they didn’t register the FIR and finally, the officers desperately tried to mislead the government with false and fabricated information just to avoid registering the complaint of the victims, which is not acceptable at all.
Addressing media on Sunday, Chairman of TSF advisory committee Upendra Debbarma alleged that a group of traffic personnel led by Constable Kishore Banik had assaulted Angle Reang (20) and Abhijit Debbarma (21) in the Agartala Traffic unit on Jan 13 last.
The boys were hit in their private parts and abused with communal words, he alleged.
Both Angel and Abhijit had allegedly been harassed further in the New Capital Complex police station after they were handed over to police.
Even the boys were not allowed to talk to their parents or inform others about the incident for a long time.
Moreover, police registered a case and served notice to Angel asking him to appear in the police station again but didn’t register the complaint of the victims yet, Debbarma told the media.
“The way our boys were attacked and harassed by police in the capital town accusing them of obstructing the CM’s convoy without any basis is nothing but an atrocity. We demanded to remove the accuse Traffic Constable Kishore Banik from the service and booked all the accused persons under Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 but the government did not do it rather attempted to protect the criminals, which prompted us to call statewide bandh as a first step of our movement,” Debbarma stated.
