Chandigarh, Aug 10 : Seven days after submitting a written complaint to police against three upper-caste men for allegedly kidnapping his wife, a 39-year-old old Jagmeet Singh allegedly hanged himself to death at his house in village Chak Tamkot, district Sri Muktsar Sahib on Tuesday.
After receiving a complaint from deceased’s minor daughter, National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Chairman Vijay Sampla issued a notice to Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police, Sri Muktsar Sahib and sought action-taken report within 15 days.
As per complaint received by NCSC on August 5, the Dalit man, who was working as a labourer, was upset over police’s inaction in the matter. “Three men, including—Khushbag Singh, Chhinder Bhagwan Singh and Gora Singh (a rural medical practitioner), kidnapped and took my mother away. Despite search, my father couldn’t trace her,” said minor daughter of the deceased.
She added, “My father had informed the local police at the Lakhewali police station about the matter on July 30, a day prior of the kidnapping, and submitted them a written complaint against the accused for luring my mother. Also, the accused had given us regular threats to kill me and my father.
On August 9, my father met the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and requested him to trace my mother, but to no avail.”
“My father was extremely upset over the incident and police’s inaction of arresting the three upper-caste men,” she told NCSC.
Besides, a suicide note has also been recovered from Jagmeet’s house which clearly said that he had decided to end his life because of police’s inaction of arresting the accused and tracing his wife.
Taking strong notice over the suicide of Dalit man, the Commission asked the authorities to submit an action taken report till August 25, through fax, email or post or in-person.
Sampla cautioned the officers that if action taken report is not received within the stipulated time, then Commission might exercise the powers of the civil court conferred on it under article 338 of the Constitution of India and issue a summon for personal appearance before the commission in Delhi.
