Leh, Aug 14: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, has highlighted the importance of putting Ladakh’s renowned Pashmina wool on the global map. He called for value addition, effective marketing, and brand-building to enhance the earnings of artisans, entrepreneurs, and self-help groups.
Shri Gupta emphasized that a thriving Pashmina sector could attract youth from the Changthang region to sustainable livelihoods while preserving traditional craftsmanship. He urged young people to aim beyond government jobs and become job creators, leveraging the opportunities provided by Centrally Sponsored Schemes for skill development, entrepreneurship, and market access.
During his visit to the Industrial Estate in Leh, the LG interacted with artisans, entrepreneurs, and members of the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Marketing Society. He inspected the Pashmina Dehairing Plant, Lena Weaving Unit, and other local production facilities, advocating modern processing techniques, product diversification, and global outreach rooted in cultural authenticity.
Shri Kavinder also lauded the craftsmanship of Padma Shri awardee Shri Tsering Namgyal at his woodcarving unit, encouraging him to continue showcasing Ladakh’s heritage to the world. Officials from various departments, along with local councillors, accompanied the LG throughout the visit.
With strengthened branding, better market reach, and active youth participation, Ladakh’s Pashmina sector aims to become a lucrative avenue for income generation and entrepreneurship.
