Form single corporator wards, Maha SEC to civic bodies

The State Election Commission of Maharashtra on Wednesday asked the civic corporations whose term ends in 2022 to start the formation of wards for ensuing elections following the single corporator ward as against the present multiple corporators ward.
The term of the civic corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Panvel, Mira-Bhayander, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Solapur, Nashik, Malegaon, Parbhani, Nanded-Waghela, Latur, Amravati, Akola, Nagpur and Chandrapur ends in 2022.
In light of this. the Commission today wrote to the Municipal commissioners to start the process of formation of wards from August 27 and stated that it is reverting to single member ward from the multi-member ward system.
The letter also said that the wards should be formed keeping in mind the population data of 2011 census, changes in the geographical factors of the wards and also reservations should be adopted in keeping with the directions of the courts.
The letter also stated that the process of preparation of the draft of ward limits should be prepared well in advance so that the election itself is completed on time.
The letter specifically stated that it has come to the notice of the Commission that the secrecy of the wards is not maintained, the rules are not followed strictly, the increase in objections to the draft plan of wards, the number of writ petitions challenging the final ward formation, and the legal cases increasing out of the same and the delay due to these factors should be avoided.
The actual programme of actual ward formation, reservations, and drawing of lots would be announced in due course, it was stated.
