NEW DELHI, Delhi Congress President Shri Devender Yadav voiced deep concern over the critical shortage of colleges and seats in Delhi University, which he said has resulted in students from economically weaker and backward communities being pushed into high-fee private universities for higher education. This, he added, effectively bars underprivileged youth from accessing quality education opportunities.
Shri Yadav blamed both the former Aam Aadmi Party Government and the current BJP-led administration for failing to expand public higher education infrastructure, claiming they have allowed private institutions to thrive while neglecting students from Dalit, backward, and marginalized families.
Highlighting the Congress party’s contributions during its 15-year rule, he mentioned initiatives like expanding Indraprastha University, establishing Ambedkar University, setting up a National Law School, and launching both a technical and a residential sports university. Under Congress, 30 new colleges and 6 universities were opened in Delhi, enabling students to pursue diverse academic streams.
In contrast, he criticized the Kejriwal-led Delhi Government for deliberately withholding funds to 12 government colleges, leading to unpaid staff and disrupted education, severely affecting the future of many students.
Yadav strongly urged the present government to build more public colleges, especially in rural belts and trans-Yamuna areas, so that students from disadvantaged backgrounds can access affordable and quality higher education.
