B’desh: Over 3 million children involved in labour, one in two...

Dhaka, Sep 19 : Over three million children in Bangladesh are trapped in child labour of which 1.3 million work very hard in hazardous conditions as child labourers. One in five children do not complete primary school. Nearly half of children don’t have birth registration. Over 1 lakh children are in institutional care and lack family support. One in every two girls is made to marry while still a child. This was revealed in a survey jointly conducted in all the 64 districts of the country by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and UNICEF.

Indian envoy calls B’desh Padma Bridge as ‘culture connector’

Dhaka, June 22 : Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Vikram K Doraiswami has congratulated Bangladesh on its achievement in building its longest ever bridge under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “difficult” but “courageous” decision saying the Padma Bridge simultaneously has a connotation involving traditional Bengal’s culture.

India-funded development projects inaugurated in Bangladesh

Dhaka, June 11 :Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Vikram K Doraiswami on Saturday inaugurated a several development projects, funded by the Indian government, at Sylhet in Bangladesh . The Indian envoy inaugurated a five-storied women hostel on the premises of Umesh Chandra-Nirmalabala Chhatrabas at Chalibandar in Sylhet. It was constructed with a financial assistance of Taka 4.35 crore from the Indian government, the Indian High Commission said.

More than 500 Banglades his detained in Libya

Dhaka, April 26 : Police in the North African country of Libya have detained more than 500 Bangladeshis off the coast of the Mediterranean. They were detained on last Saturday (April 23rd) as they prepared to cross the east coast of the country's capital, Tripoli, to Europe. Bangladesh's Ambassador to Libya Major General SM Shamim Uz Zaman has confirmed the news. Most of the detained migrants are mainly Bangladeshi nationals. This is the first time since 2016 that a large number of Bangladeshis have been detained from the coast in a single day. More than 600 migrants were rescued from the sea that year. In 2020, 26 immigration hopefuls were killed in a prison controlled by brokers. This was followed by a slight decline in the number of illegal immigrants on this route. During the Corona period, the traffic was very closed. According to the Libyan Coast Guard, the country's media reported that at one time, illegal immigrants were trying to cross the sea into Europe using the west coast of Tripoli. Dhaka, Oct 23 : Mass hunger strikes and demonstrations were held in north western part of Bangladesh on Saturday against recent violent communal attacks, temple vandalism, house looting, arson and killings taking place across the country. The protests lasted from 0900 hours till 12 pm at Saheb Bazar Zero Point in Rajshahi, a divisional city, led by Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Parishad Rajshahi district and metropolitan branch.

Bangladesh appoint Ashwell Prince as full-time batting consultant

Dhaka, Aug 13 : Former South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince will take over as Bangladesh's batting consultant till the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed. The South African worked with Bangladesh in a similar capacity during their successful tour of Zimbabwe in July but he was not available for Bangladesh's 4-1 T20I home series victory against Australia.

Judicial Magistrate dies of COVID at Jhalokhati in B’desh

Dhaka, Jul 28 : A senior judicial magistrate Sania Akhter died from COVID-19 infection on Wednesday morning at Jhalokhati Barishal. Sania died at 1100 hours at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH). Supreme Court spokesperson Md Saifur Rahman informed media. SBMCH Director Dr Ms Saiful Islam said Sania was seven-months pregnant.

Five family members die in landslide at Cox’s Bazar at Dhaka

Dhaka, Jul 28 : Five members of a family died in a landslide at Hnila in Teknaf Upazila area of Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Shukkur, Jubair, Abdur Rahim, Kohinur and Jainba. All are the sons and daughters of Syed Alam, of village Para under Hlina union.

India gave 160 metric tons of oxygen to Bangladesh

Dhaka, Jul 22 : In line with Prime minister Narendra Modi's "Neighbour first" policy to defeat Corona, about 160 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen arrived in Bangladesh Thursday on an emergency basis through India's Integrated Check Post (ICP) Petrapole. This oxygen comes in 11 tankers and its has been imported by three companies in Bangladesh called Linde, Spectra and Pure Oxygen. Considering the critical situation of liquid oxygen in hospitals in Bangladesh, ICP Petrapole officials arranged a green corridor for the export of medical oxygen.

B’desh: Police plea seeking remand of journalist Rozina Islam rejected

Dhaka, May 18 (UNI) Prothom Alo' senior reporter Rozina Islam, who was held in a case under the Official Secrets Act, was on Tuesday produced before a Dhaka Court. The court has turned down an appeal from the police to interrogate Prothom Alo’s senior reporter in their custody. She was arrested for allegedly trying to steal government documents and taking photographs of them on her mobile phone. The court will hear Rozina’s appeal for the bail on Thursday. By that time, she will be in jail. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim issued an order after a partial hearing of the case.
