Parthenium Awareness Week observed at KVK, R.S. Pura SKUAST-Jammu

ICRP Weed Management, SKUAST Jammu, organised a Parthenium Awareness Camp in collaboration with KVK, R.S. Pura Jammu today on 17.08.2023. It was part of Week long Parthenium Awareness campaign which is being organized simultaneously at national level w.e.f 16-22, August, 2023 to create awareness and educate the people/farmers/students about the Parthenium menace and its management. On the 2nd day of “Parthenium Awareness Week” Dr. Punit Choudhary, Head KVK, R.S. Pura graced the occasion and highlighted harmful effect of Parthenium which have posed a serious threat to crops, human health and livestock health, biodiversity and aesthetic value of landscapes. Further Dr. B. R. Bazaya, Incharge and PI, AICRP Weed Management emphasized that its spread is not only confined to agriculture lands but also noticed in road sides, parks, school areas, pastures etc. He further emphasized that community approach is the best possible way to get rid of the menace and can be effectively managed by uprooting the Parthenium plants well before their flowering stage. He delivered a talk to farmers and students and highlighted various harmful effects of Parthenium like hay fever, dermatitis, asthma, skin rashes, peeling skin, puffy eyes and eczema in human being through pollen.

Working under the Dynamic Leadership of Prof. J P Sharma Vice Chancellor SKUAST- Jammu and the able guidance of Dr S K Gupta Director Extension Krishi Vigyan Kendra Jammu organised one day training programme on “Prakrit Kheti”. Natural farming which is the flagship area of NITI Aayog and Prime Minister Sh Narinder Modi during his address at Palli Jammu also focused on adoption of Natural farming for environment friendly agriculture. During the training programme farmer from RS Pura and its adjoining villages participated and aquatinted with the practical demonstration and technical Know how about the various components of Prakrit Kheti. Beejamrit and Poshtik Panhgavya were also prepared by the participants during the training programme. Dr. Punit Choudhary, Sr. Scientist and Head KVK Jammu welcomed the farmers and resource persons and also emphasised on the adoption of prakrit kheti for the improvement in human and so health.

Himalayan Forest Research Institute Shimla organized a training programme in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra Jammu on “Productivity Enhancement and Sustainable Livelihood through Forest Technology Interventions. The programme was organized at KVK Jammu, SKUAST, which is working under the able and visionary leadership of Prof. J.P. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKAUSAT, Jammu, J&K, which was attended by large number of farmers, mahila mandals, youth clubs, etc. from different villages of Jammu region. At the outset of the programme Dr. Punit Choudhary, Senior Scientists and Head KVK welcomed all dignitaries and participants. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. S.S. Samant Director, HFRI, Shimla, who was the chief guest of the occasion. Professor Susheel Kumar Gupta, Registrar, SKUAST, Jammu and Dr S.K. Gupta, Director, Extension, SKUAST, Jammu were guest of honour of the occasion. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jammu working under the able leadership of Professor J. P. Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu and guidance of Dr. S. K. Gupta, Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu, successfully conducted a one-day In-service training programme on “Quality seed production in field crops” at KVK Jammu for the Extension Officers from Department of Agriculture. At the outset Dr. Punit Choudhary, Sr. Scientist and Head, KVK Jammu welcomed the participants in to the programme. He also said that this training is organized to refresh the knowledge of officers of agriculture department on the production of quality seed. The programme was also attended by some progressive farmers from Marh zone. During the programme all the topics related to field crops were covered. At the start of the training programme Pre assessment test was conducted for all the participants. Dr. Vishal Raina, Junior Scientist, Mega Seed Project, SKUAST-Jammu delivered lecture on importance of Seed processing for quality seed in field crops.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jammu working under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu organized “Interface Meeting on Organic Basmati” for all stakeholders in value chain. Prof. J. P. Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu was chief guest on the occasion whereas Dr. Naveen Prakash Singh, Chairman Commission of Agriculture Cost and Prices, was special guest of honour. He also asked the farmers to avail the benefits of PARWAAZ Scheme launched by J&K Union Territory to export the high value perishable commodities to any part of India and abroad.
