Centre says Idukki airstrip is threat to Tiger reserve

Kochi, April 30 : The Union Government has informed the Kerala High Court that the Idukki Airstrip is a threat to the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The construction of the airstrip is being made without the prior approval from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest, the Centre on Friday informed this to a Division Bench of Justice C.S. Dias and Justice C. Jayachandran. The Centre objected to the project when the Court was hearing a PIL seeking a direction to the State Government not to proceed with the construction activities in 4.8565 hectares in Iddukki where 12 acres were allotted by the State Revenue Department for the project on May 21, 2017. The National Tiger Conservation Authority has also not provided any clearance to the project development, taking place within 10 km of National Wild Sanctuary, also coming unde Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ) for which a notification is in a draft stage. The Public Works Department is conducting the development works aiming to provide training for NCC Air Wing cadets. There were reports that though several attempts were made, the testing aircraft could not land on the airstrip due to technical reasons.

About 6,500 killed due to heatwaves in India since 2010

Kochi, April 30 Heatwaves have killed more than 6,500 people in India since 2010, and intense heat is putting more stress on organs like heart and lungs as they function beyond their capacity which could be hazardous, according to Principal Investigator for National Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme Dr Naresh Purohit here on Saturday. The rattling and intense climate change-triggered heat wave in India - one of the worst in over a century's time have caused concerns of illness and death – particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people with pre-existing medical conditions, and construction and industrial workers, noted Infectious Disease Expert Dr Purohit said. As per weather reports on friday temperatures breached 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in at least nine Indian cities, Dr Purohit told UNI. "The extreme heat can cause dehydration.

Muthoottu Mini NCDs oversubscribed to tune of Rs 108 crore

Kochi, Sep 21 : Muthoottu Mini Financiers Limited's issue of Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) was oversubscribed to the tune of Rs 108 crore. The 15th issue had a base issue size of Rs 125 crore with an option to retain over-subscription. The NCD with a triple B Plus: Stable rating by leading credit rating agencies Care Ratings and India Ratings, will also be listed on the BSE, Mr Mathew Muthoottu, Managing Director, Muthoottu Mini Financiers Limited, said in a release here on Tuesday.
