Paris, Nov 25 (UNI/Sputnik) French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has criticized UK's open-door labor policy for illegal immigrants amid the deadly migrant boat accident near the French shore, which became the biggest single loss of life in the English Channel. On Wednesday, a boat with migrants sunk in the Strait of Dover. Paris had initially reported 31 deaths, but the number was later revised down to 27, according to government officials. The interior minister said that police had arrested five people suspected of organizing the illegal transfer of migrants.

Macron to unveil phased plan to ease France’s COVID-19 restrictions

Paris, Apr 29 (Xinhua) French President Emmanuel Macron will unveil a "progressive and phased" plan to relax the country's coronavirus rules on Friday, Prime Minister Jean Castex said here on Wednesday. Macron is due to announce the "prospect of a gradual return to a more normal life" as "the epidemic situation continues to improve at a steady pace," Castex told journalists. In France, the average weekly number of daily cases has fallen from 38,000 to 26,200, and the virus reproduction rate (R0) stands at 0.89, he said. "That means the circulation of the virus remains at a high level, but we are on a real downward trend even though it is slower than in November (during the second confinement phase) and its impact on the hospitalization rate, notably on the number of people in intensive care, is limited," the prime minister said.

Paris, Apr 12 (Sputnik) The Dutch Public Prosecution Service is unaware how Dutch reporters obtained the recordings of phone conversations of a defendant in the MH17 crash case, Brechtje van de Moosdijk, told Sputnik on Monday. It was revealed this weekend that journalists from the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation had at their disposal around 1,000 recordings of telephone conversations that the defendant, Sergey Dubinsky, held in July and August 2014 during and after the deadly plane crash. The recordings were made by Ukrainian special services. "I have watched the program that you are talking about, but I do not know how the journalists obtained the recordings, so I cannot say anything about it," van de Moosdijk said, asked how the reporters could obtain the classified materials.

France goes into third national lockdown as cases surge sharply

Paris, Apr 4(UNI) France on Saturday entered its third national lockdown as the rise in the number of COVID cases threatens to overwhelm the country's medical system. Under the lockdown all schools and non-essential shops will be shut for four weeks, and a curfew will be in place from 19:00 to 06:00, while from Tuesday onward people will also need a valid reason to travel more than 10 km (six miles) from their homes, the BBC reported. On Friday, France reported that the number of seriously ill COVID patients in intensive care units (ICU) increased by 145, which is the biggest jump in five months. At present France has about 5,000 COVID patients in ICUs across the country. On Friday, the country recorded 46,677 new cases and 304 deaths.
