US–Venezuela Crisis Escalates: What Happened in Caracas?

IST Digital Team January 7, 2026 3 minutes read

The US–Venezuela crisis escalated sharply this week after a large-scale US military operation in Caracas, Venezuela, resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, triggering global shock and political fallout.

The operation, dubbed Operation Absolute Resolve, was launched in the early hours of January 3, 2026, when US forces carried out intense strikes on multiple targets across the Venezuelan capital. Maduro and Flores were reportedly seized by elite US special forces and flown out of the country to face legal charges in the United States.

Casualties and Aftermath

According to Venezuelan authorities, at least 24 Venezuelan security officers and 32 Cuban military personnel were killed during the operation, with additional civilian casualties reported. US officials confirmed that several servicemembers were injured during the raid.

In response to the strike, Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a seven-day period of national mourning for military personnel who lost their lives. Cuba also announced two days of mourning for its fallen service members.

International Reaction

The crisis has drawn intense global reaction. The United Nations Human Rights Office condemned the US action, warning it violates international law and could undermine global security norms. Officials emphasized that the use of force against another sovereign state without UN authorization sets a dangerous precedent for international relations.

Countries across Latin America and Europe also voiced strong criticism. Leaders from Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba described the operation as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty, while some US lawmakers have questioned the legality and strategic consequences of the strike.

Situation on the Ground

In Caracas, reports indicate that armed militias and paramilitary groups have been deployed to maintain control and counter dissent following Maduro’s removal. Checkpoints, patrols, and security sweeps are reportedly ongoing as the interim government works to stabilize the capital amid heightened tension and fear.

US Justification and Domestic Debate

The US government, led by President Donald Trump, defends the operation as a law-enforcement effort aimed at holding Maduro accountable for alleged crimes, including drug trafficking and corruption. Trump administration officials claim the move will restore democratic order and secure stability in the region.

However, the operation has sparked debate in Washington, where some politicians argue that such unilateral military action risks drawing the US further into global conflicts without broad legislative or international support.

What Comes Next?

The situation in Venezuela remains highly volatile. With the world watching closely, international diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify, and regional powers may play a greater role in shaping the next phase of the crisis.
