Tokyo 2020: Fencer Bhavani Devi impresses on her Olympic debut before bowing out

Tokyo , Jul 26 : Indian fencer Bhavani Devi put up an impressive performance on her Olympic debut before she lost her second round match in the women’s individual sabre and bowed out of Tokyo 2020, here on Monday.

The 27-year-old Bhavani, the first fencer from the country to qualify for Olympics lost 7-15 to Rio Olympic semifinalist Manon Brunet at the Makuhari Messe Hall.

Despite her loss, Bhavani made history when she won India’s first fencing match on Sunday. She began her campaign with a superb 15-3 win against Tunisia’s Nadia Ben Azizi in the opening round.

In her clash against Brunet, Bhavani was left playing catch up throughout the match as world championships silver medallist used all her experience to negate the tactics of the Indian.

As the match progressed, the Indian fencer found it hard to cut the increasing deficit as Brunet registered a 15-7 victory to progress in the Round of 16.

Noatbly, the first to collect 15 points is declared the winner in fencing.
