CRPF SI among 2 killed; 7 residential houses damaged in heavy snowfall in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 6 (UNI) Two persons, including a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Sub Inspector and an elderly woman, died while seven residential houses were damaged in different parts of Kashmir valley due to heavy intermittent snowfall since Sunday.

Official sources said that a CRPF SI, who was posted at the residence of a former legislator Syed M Akhoon at Hazratbal in Srinagar, was critically injured when a shed collapsed due to heavy snowfall. “The injured, identified as H C Murmu of 115 battalion, was immediately taken to a hospital where he succumbed,” they said.

In another incident, an elderly woman, identified as Rani Begum, was wounded when she came under the snow that fell off from a roof of a house at Shah Mohalla Trehgam in north Kashmir district of Kupwara. The woman was immediately taken to a hospital where she was declared brought dead, they said.

Three residential houses were damaged due to heavy snowfall in the border town of Uri in north Kashmir district of Baramulla. However, there was no loss of life, the sources said.

They said two residential houses collapsed late last night due to heavy snowfall at Khag areas in central Kashmir district of Budgam. “One residential house each was also damaged at Chattabal in Srinagar and in a village in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal.

Meanwhile, several other structures were also damaged in different parts of the valley due to heavy snowfall since Sunday.

The Disaster Management department of J&K government had already asked people to clear rooftops of their houses and other structures in case of heavy snowfall.
