- India has reported 40,134 new COVID-19 cases and 422 deaths in the last 24 hours. Kerala accounted for over 50% of the new cases in India as the state reported 20,728 cases.
- 7,832 PILs were filed in various high courts across India between 2019 and July 2021 citing violation of fundamental rights, according to government data.
- India on Sunday assumed the rotating Presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August. This is India’s first Presidency of the 15-nation UNSC during 2021-22 tenure as the body’s non-permanent member and India will again preside over the Council in December next year.
- The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Sunday directed its departments to deny security clearance for passport verification, government scheme benefits and services to those involved in law and order issues, stone-pelting cases and other crimes.
- The Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday issued fresh COVID-19 guidelines, stating that all schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed till further orders.
- After he was booked for ‘attempt to murder’ over Assam-Mizoram border violence, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I’m happy if filing an FIR against me resolves the issue.”
