Attempt to smuggle arms & ammunition into Kashmir foiled, 2 arrested recovered

Srinagar, Sep 9 (UNI) Alert security forces foiled a militant attempt to smuggle in arms and ammunition into Kashmir valley from outside when they arrested two suspected militants and recovered the US-made automatic weapons and Chinese pistols, a defence ministry spokesman said here Wednesday morning.

Col Rajesh Kalia said based on Jammu and Kashmir police inputs, a joint Mobile Vehicle Check (MVC) of police and Army intercepted a truck on Jammu-Srinagar highway mid-night yesterday.

During the checking of the truck near Jawahar Tunnel, Kulgam joint security force team recovered one AK rifle with two magazines, one M4 US Carbine with three magazines, six Chinese pistols with 12 magazines and two grenades. He said the truck was coming from Jammu-Akhnoor.

Col Kalia said two suspected militants were arrested and further investigation has been taken up.

Meanwhile, official sources said two suspected were identified as Shahnawaz Ahmad Mir and Bilal Ahmad Kuttey, residents of Chotipora Shopian in south Kashmir. The trucks, which has Shopian number, has been seized.
