Chennai, Sep 25 (UNI) Tens and hundreds of people of this
teeming megapolis bade a tearful farewell, as the mortal
remains of legendary singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, who
died this afternoon, was taken to his farm house at
Tamaraipakkam near Redhills on the outskirts of the city,
for last rites tomorrow.
Earlier, soon after his death, the embalmed body of SPB, as
he was affectionately called, was brought to his Nungambakkam
residence from the hospital, where leaders of various parties,
including Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK Youth Wing Secretary
and DMK President M K Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi, and members
of the film fraternity and people from various walks of life paid
their last respects.
A steady stream of mourners, braving slight rain, filed past the
body of SPB and paid their homage.
As his body was brought to his residence from the hospital
at 1600 hrs, a large number of people thronged his residence
to pay their homage, ignoring the social distancing norms, in
view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Soon police restored order and tens and hundreds of people
queued up to a distance of nearly two km by following the
social distancing norms and paid their respects.
Earlier, it was said that SPB’s body would be taken to his
farm house tomorrow morning. But, due to unprecedented
crowd, which kept swelling with every passing minute, and
following a request made by the police citing the COVID-19
lockdown norms, it has been decided to take it to
Tamaraipakkam tonight itself.
After about little over three hours during which public paid
their homage at his residence, the final journey of SPB
commenced at around 1930 hrs and it would take around
one hour to reach his farm house.
Sources said public would not be allowed to pay their homage
at the farm house and only close family members would be
present at the last rites tomorrow morning.
