ED likely to probe into funding to fuel caste based agitation in Hathras

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Enforcement Directorate is likely to take up investigation into the alleged fundingto fuel caste-based agitation in Hathras case following an FIR registered by the Uttar Pradesh Government, the ED said here on Tuesday.

The probe agency is examining the UP Government’s FIR to register a case under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to see if dubious funds were sent to create social unrest in the state and as well as many parts of the country through a website which was later deleted from the online platform.

The law empowers ED to confiscate suspicious funds collected for any alleged illegal activity through an online platform. Those involved can be arrested and prosecuted under the PMLA, they added.

The Hathras police FIR has been filed under Section 153A (promoting enmity between groups) of the IPC, a schedule offence wherein sections of PMLA can be applied and once a case registered by the ED, it will trace the ultimate beneficiaries of the alleged fund collected.

According to an FIR registered by the UP Police on Monday, hinting at international conspiracy to defame the Yogi Adityanath Government in state and Narendra Modi-led Government in Centre, by forging, manipulated the facts and statement of the Government on the Hathras case and circulated on social media platforms that could trigger caste-based conflict.
The probe agency has also some inputs on linkage of international human right watchdog Amnesty International which has been recently banned its operation in the country following violation of FCRA rules.

A Dalit woman died of grievous injuries in a Delhi hospital on September 29, a fortnight after she was allegedly raped by four upper caste men in her village.
She was cremated in the wee hours of September 30 . While her family claimed the cremation was carried out against their wishes, the police said the last rites were held ‘as per the wishes of the family’. The hurriedly cremation of the victim by the Police triggered massive outrage across the country.

Facing severe criticism over the incident, the UP Government has recommended a CBI probe into the whole episode.
