Initiative for reusing, upcycling non-biodegradable plastic waste on Gandhi-150

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the sixth year of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, PepsiCo India and United Way Delhi launched have ‘WhyWaste campaign’, a waste management initiative that aims at reducing and reusing plastic and upcycling the non-biodegradable plastic waste generated at home and communities.

The Why Waste campaign reached to over one lakh Individuals, students, and youth from all over India and RWAs across Delhi-NCR participated in the campaign showcasing their ideas of dealing with plastic waste and upcycling it using creativity and transforming for better use.

A virtual panel discussion was conducted on Friday, joined by chief guest Ashok Sangwan, District Commissioner, Gurugram.

Mr Sangwan said, ‘Why Waste Campaign of Pepsico India and United Way Delhi is the step towards helping communities to explore innovative ways and reuse plastic at home. Children and parents are spending more time at home during the ongoing pandemic, such campaigns ignites creativity together. This campaign generates awareness among people on how plastic that is generally of no use can be used with creativity to make our environment safe.’

Speaking about the campaign, United Way Delhi CEO Sachin S Golwalkar said, “WhyWaste Campaign of Pepsico India and United Way Delhi aligned with Swachh Bharat Mission is a great initiative towards bringing change in communities by making citizens aware on the benefits of upcycling and reusing plastic which is left unused at home and ends up landfill sites.

‘The plastic generation in India is increasing every day. Annually more than 5 million tonnes of plastic goes to waste, which can be managed better at personal level, segregated at home and upcycled. As we contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, it is important to find newer and creative solutions, the WhyWaste campaign is one such opportunity wherein the nation comes together to make a conscious step towards upcycling plastic generated at home.”

The winners will get featured in the Why Waste campaign film of Pepsico India and United Way Delhi.

Announcing the launch of the program, PepsiCo India President Ahmed ElSheikh said, ‘Aligned with its philosophy of Winning with Purpose, PepsiCo India is always on the lookout for opportunities to create awareness around sustainably managing plastics. Out intent clearly is to make sure that plastics never become waste.’

Plastic is among the first preferences while it is about storing things, mostly liquid at our places. The properties that make it popular, like its lightweight, water impermeability, and long life, are the same that make it more difficult to dispose of and pose a severe threat to the environment and consumer’s health in many direct and indirect ways.
