Pranab Mukherjee laid to rest with full state honours

New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, who passed away yesterday, was cremated with full state honours at the Lodhi crematorium on Tuesday afternoon.

His last rites were performed by his son Abhijit Mukherjee following COVID-19 guidelines.

An Army contingent gave a guard of honour and a gun salute to the former president.

The mortal remains were brought from his official residence 10 Rajaji Marg to the crematorium in a hearse van instead of the ceremonial gun carriage due to the COVID-19 protocols.

Relatives, friends and personnel– who shouldered his body from the van to the pyre– were clad in PPE kits.

Mukherjee’s mortal remains were brought to his official residence this morning from the Army Research and Referral Hospital, where he passed away after battling multiple ailments.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi , former PM Dr Man Mohan Singh, LS Speaker Om Birla, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the CDS, Tri-services chiefs and other dignitaries paid their last respects to the stalwart of Indian politics at his official residence.

Mukherjee(84) was admitted to the R & R hospital here on August 10 and underwent a life saving brain surgery after discovery of a clot.

He had also tested positive for the COVID-19 infection and battled for life in deep coma, till he suffered a septic shock due to the lung infection and succumbed.
