Om Birla to attend outreach programme for Panchayati Raj Institutions at Dehradun

New Delhi, Jan 6 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will attend Outreach and Familiarisation programme for Panchayati Raj Institutions at Dehradun on January 8.

On the initiative of Mr Birla and with a view to introducing Panchayat Members to the functioning of the Parliament and to provide them an exposure to the democratic principles and ethos, an Outreach and Familiarisation programme for Panchayati Raj Institutions of the country is being organised

on January 8 at Dehradun, Uttarakhand, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in a statement here on Wednesday. Mr Birla, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly Speaker Prem Chand Aggarwal and other dignitaries will be attending the inaugural function.

The theme of the programme is ‘Panchayati Raj System: Strengthening the Decentralised Democracy’. Around 405 Panchayat representatives including 26 Zila Panchayat Chairman and Deputy Chairman alongwith 109 Block Panchayat Pramukh and 270 nominated Gram Pradhans of Uttarakhand will be physically attending the programme.

In addition, the 376 Zila Panchayat Members, 3,201 Block Panchayats Members and 7,791 Gram Pradhan will also be connected to the programme ‘online via weblink’.

The main aim and objectives of the programme is to create mass awareness/mass participation; to develop self confidence/self respect for the ground level leaders, to have sense of ownership of the assets that have been created, sensitising the grass root political leaders about democratic values, creating awareness about the various schemes and the doorstep delivery – opportunities for development work and opportunity to develop a network and push the aspirational levels of the ground level leadership.

The said programme is being organised by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), Lok Sabha Secretariat in coordination with the Government of Uttarakhand for the Panchayati Raj Institutions of the State of Uttarakhand.
