Rajeev Sharma gets seven-day police custody in Espionage case

New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) A local court on Monday sent freelance Journalist Rajeev Sharma to seven-day police custody on Espionage charges, under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act.

Sharma was arrested on September 14, along with a Chinese woman and her Nepalese associate. They were produced before the court, after expiry of their current police custody. The Investigating Agency sought their further remand.

The Chinese woman and her associate allegedly paid a large amount of money to Sharma, which was routed through different shell companies.

Delhi Police submitted before the Court that they were required to be confronted with each other.

It further submitted that Sharma was found to be in possession of some Defence-related classified documents.

The Defence Counsel submitted before the Court that the applicants were falsely implicated in the case and moved a bail application, on behalf of Sharma.

He submitted that Sharma was a reputed person of the society and his wife was also a Professor in a college. He said the accused will produce a sound surety in the Court, if released on bail and appear before the Court, as and well directed.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pawan Singh Rajawat, after hearing the argument, ordered seven-day police custody to all three accused.
